Referee/Scorekeeper FAQ's
Who is allowed to sign up for this program?
High school students who live in Needham and/or attend Needham High School. College students who live in Needham are welcome as well.
Where will the games be held?
Games are held at the St. Joseph School gyms and Pollard Middle School.
Is there a training session?
There will be a training session that is mandatory to attend. This year we are also adding a quick test that you must pass before you can ref any games. You can take the test as many times as needed.
How much do you get paid per game?
First year referees get paid $16 per game. More experienced refs get $18 per game. Scorekeepers get $16 per game.
What time of year does this program run?
The NYBL runs from mid-November through mid-March. There are no games during public school vacation weeks.
How often will you be asked to ref?
Depending on the week and availability, you could work 2-3 nights during the week. Usually you would be asked to ref 2-3 games per night.
Are jerseys and whistles provided?
Jerseys and whistles will be handed out at the ref training. You will be required to wear your jersey every time you are reffing or scorekeeping.

The Needham Youth Basketball league (NYBL) is a recreational basketball league for children in 1st-8th grade, who live in Needham, MA or attend school in Needham, MA. All abilities welcome and encouraged.
